Bootcamp Basics

If you are in the process of preparing for a military career with the United States Armed Services you have quite a road ahead of you. In addition to working on your application process and studying for your upcoming ASVAB you should also be focusing on getting into top physical shape for bootcamp. In this article I will give you a breakdown on which exercises to focus on that will help you get into shape for basic training.
Regardless of which branch you are joining, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard, you will have to go through military bootcamp more commonly referred to as Basic Training. This training, while doable will not be easy. You will be met with many mental, physical and emotional challenges. The more prepared you are going into bootcamp, the stronger will be your ability to meet the challenges head on and make it all the way through.
Physical preparation is one of the easiest and more important aspects you can prepare for. There will be a great deal of working out in basic training. From marching with your unit, running during PT and doing push-ups or related exercises as punishment for one thing or another.
The more prepared you are the less likely you will be to sustain injury or endure a long and painful recovery after working out.
Here are some of the most basic exercises you should focus on in preparation for bootcamp.
Running
This should be a given. Running is used to measure your fitness ability and qualify for your branches fitness requirements. If you are required to run 1.5 to 3 miles you should aim to run 3-5 miles on a regular basis. This will ensure that then 1.5-3 mile run under strained bootcamp conditions will be doable for you.
Walking - Long Distances
This exercise is less intuitive for recruits given that it is not seen as an exercise of endurance. However, there will be a lot of marching in bootcamp and so you have to train your legs to walk these long distances without tiring. The next time you go shopping or to visit a friend, park your car 1-2 miles away and walk the distance.
Push-ups
Push-ups are a favorite form of punishment in bootcamp. If you get a question wrong, are caught doing something you shouldn't, or simply anger your drill sergeants or RDCs you will be required to do push-ups. Learn to do them correctly and continuously so that your arms don't feel 'dead' throughout basic training.
Holding the Push-Up Position
This is another favorite for drill sergeants. Instead of making you do push-ups they will ask you to get into push-up position and simply hold it. While it looks easy at first, your arms will tire rather quickly potentially making this exercise more difficult than the actual push-ups.
